Why Focusing on Improving Your Happiness Matters

In today's fast-paced and demanding world, it's easy to become overwhelmed and lose sight of what truly matters – our happiness. Many of us, me included, get caught up in the pursuit of what we are expected to focus on: success, wealth, and material possessions, often neglecting our emotional well-being. However, understanding the significance of prioritizing our happiness is essential for leading a fulfilling and purposeful life. I started life coaching because I felt I had a background and skill set that could help GBTQ men navigate their life more successfully. The recurring topic during my coaching sessions has been a desire by clients to be happier. I want to start the conversation by exploring the reasons why focusing on improving your happiness is crucial for overall well-being and how it positively impacts various aspects of your life.

Health and Well-Being

I was shocked to hear that in 2011 the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) reported the rate of antidepressant use in this country among teens and adults (people ages 12 and older) increased by almost 400% between 1988–1994 and 2005–2008. In 2020, the NCHS reported those numbers had continued to increase. Numerous studies have shown a strong correlation between happiness and physical health. When you are happy, your body releases endorphins and reduces stress hormones, leading to improved immune system function and a reduced risk of chronic diseases. A positive outlook on life can promote better sleep, lower blood pressure, and a decreased likelihood of developing mental health issues such as anxiety and depression. Prioritizing your happiness can contribute to a healthier and more vibrant life.

Enhanced Relationships

Happiness is contagious. When you focus on improving your happiness, you radiate positive energy, making it easier for you to build and maintain meaningful connections with others. Happy individuals tend to be more empathetic, compassionate, and understanding, which strengthens their relationships with partners, friends, family, and colleagues. Moreover, happiness fosters a sense of gratitude and appreciation for the people in your life, leading to deeper bonds and a support network during challenging times. Who wants to be around a sourpuss anyways?

Increased Productivity and Success

Contrary to popular belief that success leads to happiness (at least in our capitalistic society), research indicates that happiness actually drives success. When you are happy, your brain functions more effectively, enhancing creativity, problem-solving skills, and decision-making abilities. Positive emotions are linked to increased motivation and productivity, which can lead to better performance in your personal and professional endeavors. Embracing a positive mindset can empower you to achieve your goals and overcome obstacles more efficiently.

Resilience and Coping Mechanisms

Life is unpredictable, and challenges are inevitable. This tends to be a HUGE focus of a lot of my life coaching sessions - an inability to accept failure as an opportunity to learn and then move on. Focusing on improving your happiness equips you with greater resilience to handle difficult situations. Happy individuals tend to possess better coping mechanisms, allowing them to bounce back from setbacks and learn from failures. This emotional resilience helps to navigate life's ups and downs with a more optimistic outlook, ultimately leading to a more satisfying and fulfilling life journey.

Self-Discovery and Authenticity

Ultimately, due to a myriad of factors: societal pressure, parental expectations, desire to fit in within friend groups, conformity, homophobia, gay homophobia, etc… GBTQ men don’t always fully develop an understanding of who they are. I work with 90% of my clients on this topic. Improving your happiness involves understanding your values, passions, and purpose in life. By prioritizing self-discovery, you gain a deeper understanding of yourself and your unique qualities. This awareness leads to greater authenticity, as you align your choices and actions with your true self. Embracing your authenticity fosters a sense of fulfillment and inner peace, allowing you to lead a more authentic and genuine life.

My driving desire is to support and assist YOU in your pursuit of a fulfilling life, and happiness should be at the forefront of our priorities. By focusing on improving our happiness, we cultivate better physical and mental health, nurture meaningful relationships, and empower ourselves to achieve success. Happiness is not merely a destination; it's a way of living and perceiving the world around us. The journey to happiness may differ for each individual, but the destination is universal - a life enriched with joy, purpose, and contentment. So, let us all make a conscious effort to prioritize our happiness and embrace the profound positive impact it can have on our lives.
